John T. Crenshaw letter : Nevada City, Calif., 1856 Feb. 16.

Letter written by Nevada City Democrat assemblyman to a "Gen_ " (General?) in Washington, D.C., on behalf of Michael Cassin, a light house keeper on "Bird or Alcatraz Island." seeking assistance in obtaining back pay due him for services rendered from October 1853 to June 1, 1854 when the lights were installed in the lighthouse structure. The author notes that the Cassin was assigned to his duties by the Inspector of Lighthouses. Capt. Hollich and began them in October 1853. The author further notes that this was the first light house activated on the West Coast. The light house keeper's salary is described at $1100 per annum. Other details include opinions about the current state of the Democracy and the upcoming election, and asks about the prospects for passage of the Pacific Railroad bill in the "next session."
